SBS Academic Services and Advising at NAU

Happy summer SBS people!

You’ve probably settled into the groove of summer and the swing of relaxation, but then it hit you…summer classes started this week!  The first day of catching up on coursework, getting ahead, or just making yourself crazy with summer school is here!  Truly, though, summer is a great time to catch up on all kinds of things.

You’re not taking summer classes or completing an internship, but you have a ton of free time. What will make your summer stand out?

A great thing to do in the summer is spend some time volunteering!  This is absolutely experience that can go on your resume and always is a plus because you are making a connection with a community and likely learning something about yourself!

You might be asking, oh wise advisor, how do I find volunteer opportunities?  Well, wise student, there are endless opportunities right at your fingertips!  Some great places to inquire about volunteering are libraries, schools, and recreation centers.  It’s always a good idea to actually walk into the facility that you wish to volunteer with.  Bring a copy of your resume and ask if they have any opportunities for volunteer work.

Another awesome opportunity to volunteer anywhere in the world is Habitat for Humanity.  Habitat for Humanity is an internationally recognized organization and offers a ton of volunteer opportunities in different areas including home building or working in their retail store.  Check out opportunities in your area at the following website: http://www.habitat.org/local.

Does the idea of taking summer coursework suddenly sound appealing?

Any Northern Arizona University student can transfer up to 64 units from a community college to count toward NAU requirements.  Keep in mind, some majors only count a certain amount of transfer credits toward the major requirements.  However, if you’re interested in taking a summer course at a local community college in Arizona, there’s a great way to know how it will transfer to NAU.  The website http://aztransfer.com/ has equivalencies of courses from community colleges to all three Arizona universities.  From the main page, click “quick links” and then “course equivalency.”

Remember to always check with your advisor to be sure that credits you’re completing will count toward your degree.  You can always email our general email at: sbs.advisor@nau.edu.

Finally, if you’re just relaxing over this summer, catch up on TV, eat as many Doritos as you can, and smile!  We’ll see you in the fall!

Next week, we’re talking about the difference between Psychology and Social Work.  If you’re debating on which major to choose, make sure to read the next blog post!
